Right to Rent - some frequently asked questions

ARLA were in the development panel as part of the set up for Right to Rent, as well as being on the forefront of delivering presentations accross the UK.

They have compiled a series of questions and answers to the most common situations that they have come accross, which we think will be usefull guidance in helping landlords and agents to stay compliant with the regulations.

Right to Rent FAQ

The Right to Rent scheme requires landlords or agents to check the ID of all prospective adult occupiers over the age of 18. This started on 1 February 2016 and applies to all new PRS tenancies from that date. Where an adult occupier has a time limited right to remain in the UK (e.g. student), landlords and letting agents will need to conduct follow up checks. This needs to be made 12 months from the initial ID check or at the expiry of the individual’s right to be in the UK, whichever is the later.
