Landlords in England get ready for Right to Rent
The Home Office is reminding landlords and tenants that there is less than a month to go before Right to Rent goes live across England.
From 1 February, all private landlords in England, including those subletting or taking in lodgers, will have to check new tenants have the right to be in the UK before renting out a property.
Landlords can already start carrying out Right to Rent checks as they can be done from 28 days before the start of a tenancy agreement. The process is simple and many landlords already make similar checks.
There are resources available to help landlords comply with the new rules:
- A checking aid on GOV.UK, which landlords can use to guide them through the process, and also to request a check on anyone who has an outstanding case with the Home Office.
- The Home Office has been working with a panel of industry experts to produce an updated landlords’ code of practice which includes changes to the acceptable document list to make it even simpler to conduct a check.
- A short video explaining how to carry out a Right to Rent check.
The Home Office has also produced a content pack for organisations who engage with the private rented sector regularly to help raise awareness of the checks. If you would like to receive the pack, contact IEStratComms@homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk.
