National Code for Student Accommodation Newsletter 2016
‘Happy 2016 to all members of the National Codes for Accommodation.
I’m sure this will prove to be yet another exciting year for the student accommodation sector.
At the start of the New Year the total number of bed spaces covered by the Codes is edging towards the 230,000 mark, but this excludes somewhere in the region on 9,000 bed spaces that have recently changed operational management, as well as additional bed spaces that members have added but which have still to be reported to me. 2016 will also be the year that the first student developments in the North of Ireland will be accredited under the Codes.
The first big challenge of the year is likely to be an attempt to amend the UK’s Government’s
Housing Bill in such a way as to ‘except’ from the definition of an HMO for licensing purpose
ALL purpose-built student accommodation - including that operated by private providers - if it is accredited under an approved Code. Another challenge will be to influence the bills that are likely to be passing through both the Scottish and Welsh Assemblies which seek to alter tenure arrangements.
