Council gearing up to ensure landlord compliance with Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) Regulations across Boston Borough
Boston Borough Council will shortly be writing to landlords to advise them of their obligations under the Domestic Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard (MEES) Regulations
The regulations, which came into force on the 1 April 2020, set a minimum standard for domestic private rented properties and mean landlords can no longer let or continue to let properties with an Energy Performance Certificate rating below E, unless they have a valid exemption in place.
Boston Borough Council will be providing advice letters to landlords who have a current EPC register rating of “F” or “G” to request a compliant certificate and offering advice on how to obtain one.
If you are currently planning to let out a property with an EPC rating of F or G, you need to improve the property’s rating to E or above, or register an exemption.
While the initial step will be to offer advice letters to landlords, failure to comply with the regulations will lead to the Council implementing enforcement powers which permit Financial Penalties to be served on any landlord that is found to have breached these regulations.
