EU settlement scheme
The UK has now stopped being a member of the European Union and is now in a transition period until 31st December 2020. If EU, EEA* or Swiss citizens wish to stay in the UK beyond the end of the transition period they and their close family members will need to apply for the UK Government’s EU settlement scheme.
Landlords are being encouraged to speak to their tenants about the EU settlement scheme.
EU citizens and their families who have been continuously resident in the UK for five years until the end of 31 December 2020 may apply for settled status. They will continue to be able to work, study, and access benefits and services in the UK on the same basis as they do now.
* The EEA includes the EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
Right to Rent checks will continue in the same way as now until 30th June 2021 for EEA citizens
Pre-settled status
Those who have not been continuously resident for under five years may be eligible for pre-settled status. They will also be able to work, study and access benefits and services on the same basis as now. Once they have 5 years’ continuous residence they will be able to apply for settled status.
