Lincolnshire Landlords Electronic Newsletter - Issue 21 - Right to Rent
Right to Rent checks introduced
As reported in the last newsletter, Right to Rent checks were introduced for all new tenancies starting on or after 1st February 2016. The checks extend to all adults living in the rented property.
Guidance on the process and examples of acceptable documents is available for landlords: https://www.gov.uk/check-tenant-right-to-rent-documents
Copies of the evidence, for example a passport or a biometric residence permit, must be retained by the landlord.
Landlords who employ a letting agent to manage their properties should satisfy themselves that these checks are being carried out as part of the service they receive. Civil penalties (fines) can be levied on landlords by the Home Office where these new rules are not complied with.
