Prosecution for unlicensed HMO in South Holland
A landlord in the South Holland District has been fined £11,000 for letting an unlicensed HMO.
A Notice of Intent to issue a Financial Penalty was issued in July 2021. Despite the landlord engaging with the council, requests for information and action were not forthcoming and a Final Notice was issued in January this year.
South Holland District Council were also able to assist a tenant residing in the unlicensed property to successfully secure a Rent Repayment Order (RRO).
It is imperative that landlords of large HMOs (usually 5 sharers or more) ensure that they are not only licensed but fully compliant with all regulations. South Holland District Council will ensure that enforcement is a priority and that non-compliant landlords will be dealt with severely according to legislation.
A spokesperson from South Holland District Council said ‘We also thank our compliant landlords for their professionalism and continued co-operation and are looking at ways to be able to reward these landlords in the future’
