Recycling is changing: Separate paper and card collections for Boston borough residents to begin in Spring
Residents in Boston Borough will receive a new purple-lidded recycling bin, for clean and dry paper and card, this month.
This borough-wide roll-out comes after the hugely successful trial last year where residents from Fenside, Wyberton and part of Boston Town trialled putting clean, dry paper and card in a separate purple bin. Over a 12 month period, over 187 tonnes of clean and dry paper and card were collected, with over 98% of residents putting their purple bins out each month.
Cllr Yvonne Stevens, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, explains: "We know this is a change for residents across the borough, so to help, we will be sharing information about the changes, a recycling guide showing which materials go in your blue bin, and a guide for the new purple-lidded bin or alternative container for collecting clean and dry paper and card.
"We will also be hosting virtual sessions where we can help with recycling questions and giving residents tours behind the scenes with our amazing collection staff.
"A dedicated team will be on hand to help and give advice and guidance over the phone, via email and out in the community supporting the team that will be delivering the bins.
"We are expecting to start delivering the new purple-lidded paper and card bins from Monday 22 March and this will take approximately four weeks."
Cllr Eddy Poll, Executive Councillor for Waste and Recycling at Lincolnshire County Council, said: "COVID and lockdown has meant that homes have increased levels of cardboard packaging to dispose of, so people are finding these bins really useful. For us, it means the paper and card can be kept clean and dry and then can be sent to a dedicated processor in the UK.
"This saves many road miles, reduces carbon emissions and enables a product to be created which can be reused and recycled again."
Every household will receive an information pack giving details of the changes.

Household Waste Recycling Centres to accept all wastes on all days
From Monday 8th March 2021, Household Waste Recycling Centres in Lincolnshire will change – with residents being able to take recycling, garden waste and general waste on any opening day.
Cllr Eddy Poll, executive member for waste and recycling, explains: "I'd like to thank residents for their patience. We've been working hard behind the scenes to make sure the system can operate safely with all waste types being brought on the same day. This, together with the progress being made by the vaccination programme, means that from 8 March, residents will be able to bring their recycling, garden waste and general waste on any day we are open.
"We would however ask residents to separate their waste types and load their vehicle accordingly – so we can ensure as much is recycled as possible."
The booking system will remain, so residents will still need to visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/clickandtip or call 01522 782070 to book their time slot.
Vans and larger trailers will still need to have a permit to access the sites, which can also be accessed via www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/clickandtip.
