Renters Reform Bill
It was announced in the Queen’s Speech in May that the Government will bring forward the Renters Reform Bill in the coming session of Parliament. A White Paper policy document will be published shortly outlining their proposals, perhaps before the Summer recess in July.
The Bill is likely to include:
- Abolishing Section 21, no fault evictions
- Reforms to possession grounds which would strengthen a landlords legitimate grounds for taking back their property
- Extending the Decent Homes Standard to the private rented sector for the first time
- Preventing landlord from receiving housing benefit for renting poor quality homes
- A new Private Renters’ ombudsman to enable disputes between renters and landlords to be resolved without going to court
- New ‘property portal’ to help landlords understand obligations, help tenants see compliance information and support local authority enforcement.
