What is Cuckooing in rental homes?

Cuckooing is a term used when Organised Crime Groups or perpetrators take over properties through force, deceit or coercion. It is often included with "County Lines" activity, occurring when gangs take control over a vulnerable adult's address as a site to store/supply/produce drugs from.

There have also been reports of individuals holding the properties for pop-up brothels, storing weapons or other illicit and unwanted activity. Gangs will do this in order to avoid detection.

The Cuckooing Research and Prevention Network has recently collaborated with West Yorkshire Police to produce an informative short animation about cuckooing victimisation which can be watched here.

Cuckooing can occur in any tenure property.

If you have concerns that it could be occurring in your property, contact your local council housing team for more assistance.
